The Book of Dreams
As part of the concept phase of the exhibition dream.lab by Rivane Neuenschwander, the children from the children’s advisory classes explored their dreams. The large-format sheets they created were bound into a Book of Dreams, which is accessible to all visitors of the KinderKunstLabor.
The Book was created before the exhibition’s opening, during the concept phase of dream.lab, which opened on 13 September 2024 in the exhibition space of the KinderKunstLabor. The children engaged artistically with the themes of “dream” and “dreaming”, documenting their own aesthetic experiences in the process.
The children used earth pigments, gouache, colored pencils, chalks, and felt-tip pens to express their dreams on large sheets of paper up to 85 x 120 cm. The surfaces provided not only space for painting but also room for movement and physical engagement. Multiple children could work on the same sheet from different sides simultaneously, breaking down conventional hierarchies such as top-bottom or north-south.
In addition to traditional drawing and painting materials, the children also used found objects collected on the way to the KinderKunstLabor. This resulted in works that reflect both individual expression and tactile, sensory experiences.
The hand-bound Dream Book makes the children’s creative processes comprehensible and offers visitors of all ages – parents, educators, and young art enthusiasts – a varied and inspiring visual experience.
